Silk Highway 21C
8th November - 30th November 2013
An exhibition curated by Brahim Alaoui

Worklist

“21st C – SILK HIGHWAY” recalls trade along the ancient Silk Road that, since ancient times, has linked China and the Middle East and thereby fostered an intense movement of people, material and ideas.

The "21st C - SILK HIGHWAY" curated by Brahim Allaoui, presents a selection of contemporary Arab artists including : Halim Al Karim (Irak), Mahmud Al Obaidi (Irak), Zoulikha Bouabdellah (Algeria), Ali Chirri (Lebanon), Mohamed El Baz (Morocco), Mounir Fatmi (Morocco), Youssef Nabil (Egypt) et Faisal Samra (Saudi Arabia).

The changes that have occurred in Asia and the Middle East since the coming of the era of globalization have contributed to the emergence of vibrant arts scenes that have changed the geography of art and which today are trying to create new bridges between each other. Contemporary Arab artists are participating in this by taking up an aesthetic of communication or through practicing cultural nomadism. Together, they are exploring new territories, confronting alterity and participating in the emergence of a modernity of multiple and universal resonances.

The "21st C - SILK HIGHWAY" exhibition will offer a selection of this recent artistic output including paintings, sculptures, photographs and installations. As many works echoing the artists’ cultural interferences, their evolving world and their creative potential.
